What is Exploring?

Exploring is a program for young adults who want to learn more about careers by visiting work settings, talking with professionals, and trying out certain  work activities. The Exploring program is affiliated with “Learning For Life” (http://www.learningforlife.org/) and each group plans their own activities around the interests of the Post and its members.

What is Oshkosh Post #9420 about?

Oshkosh Police Explorer Post #9420 has been in existence for more than 30 years. The Explorers in the Post are provided with opportunities to learn about careers in law enforcement through classroom instruction as well as hands on training.

How do the Explorers learn about Law Enforcement?

Training and information is provided by  professionals working in the field of law enforcement at the Explorer meetings. The Explorers gain experience by helping the police department with traffic direction and crowd control at community events.  Perhaps the activity the Explorers like best is the ride-along program where Post members are able to ride with the officers during the course of their regular patrol duties.  Explorers find out first hand what police work is really like.

When do the Explorers meet?

The Oshkosh Police Explorers Post # 9420 meets the 1st, 3rd, and sometimes 5th Monday of every month from 6:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Oshkosh Police Department - 420 Jackson Street. Dates and times are subject to change based on activities.

What do Explorers do?

The Explorer Advisors plan activities to give the members a variety of experiences. The emphasis is on law enforcement experiences, but social, outdoor, personal fitness, citizenship,  and service learning activities are  an important part of the program. Here are samples of what you might do:

Þ Ride with a police officer on patrol

Þ Direct traffic at a community events

Þ Attend Explorer competitions

Þ Make simulated traffic stops

Þ Learn how to process evidence
